Traditional themes of the American roadtrip are moonstruck by the cryptic code blanketing the surface and the whimsical storage space. The result is a bandsaw box of both time-honored motif and mystic charm.
The Turning Around America Van is inspired by Beth Ireland’s real-life van that she traveled in teaching woodworking. There are three internal drawers and three pencil boxes. The writing on the exterior of the box is an essay written in Irelands symbol alphabet she created and is about her Turning Around America trip and its impact it made on her life. The winning bidder will receive their full name written in symbols as a beginning to cyphering the story.
BETH IRELAND is a Woodturner/Sculptor who draws upon a lifetime of professional, traditional Woodturning/Woodworking skills to explore sculpture, architecture and relational aesthetics. Her belief in the power of the object drives her work, exploring the idea of memory locked in objects, and the creation of object as a visible symbol of memory. Working alone and collaboratively she delves into the anthropological meaning of making in our modern lives.
Your bid not only benefits the Center but the artist as well, proceeds of the winning bid are split 50/50.
