Moving Image Matters: Documenting and Performing Craft in Video
May 3 – July 20, 2019
Curator: Jennifer-Navva Milliken
Philadelphia PA: The Center for Art in Wood is pleased to present Moving Image Matters: Documenting and Performing Craft in Video, an exhibition curated by Artistic Director Jennifer-Navva Milliken. The exhibition examines the use of video as a medium of expression and interpretation by artists and makers for whom material is the anchor of their studio work. With easier access to equipment and distribution by the Internet and video-sharing platforms, video is emerging as a medium for exploring the poetics of materials, aestheticizing processes, or reflecting on the studio practice. These video works represent modes of thinking and approaches shared by makers of craft-based practices. Together, they assert that making is as much about ideas as it is about objects.
Moving Image Matters consists of ten short video works made by artists and makers from the First Nations tribe of Ts’msyen and Mikisew Cree, Israel, Japan, Scotland, and the United States. The works in the exhibition represent strategies embraced by artists and makers from a range of material-based practices, including clay, metal, and glass, as well as wood. The international, pan-disciplinary scope of the exhibition emphasizes the universality of video as a legitimate medium of artistic expression, and not only as a tool for marketing or demonstrating process.
The Center invites the press for a preview of Moving Image Matters: Documenting and Performing Craft in Video with the Artistic Director on Friday, May 3, 2019, 8 – 10 am.
