Notes: In 1992, I created a new and different type of turned wood bowl that I called a mosaic bowl. This is the piece that I submitted to the (Wood Turning) Center’s 1994 Challenge V – International Lathe Turned Objects. I was trying to show how wood could be used in a different orientation than a single piece. I decided to make a bowl using the cross sections of small pieces of wood covering the entire surface. This way it would show the end grain view of each piece. There were several attempts made trying to figure out how to attach the pieces and how to fill in the spaces between them. I ended up using an existing bowl that had been turned round as a form and then glued the cross sectioned pieces of wood to it. I saved my wood dust from sanding and added carbon black as a pigment to give a high contrast to the pieces. After all of the pieces were in place, I filled the space between them. The piece was then turned on the lathe and to get a smooth exterior. Next the bowl that was used as a form inside was cut away leaving the disks suspended in the matrix. I feel that this bowl was a big accomplishment for using different materials and techniques. It also had a unique appearance that was solely of my own design.
