Notes: Wood is beautiful. Wood is unique. Wood is alive. Wood is nature embodied. Wood is a limited resource. For all of these reasons, I have used discarded wood as a major component in my art since 1998. Moving easily between figurative and abstract representations of nature, I often combine forms that I have completely shaped with altered found wood objects into a single piece. What the Flock? The early piece I choose is a collaboration I made with the late, great Neil Scobie during the International Turning Exchange in 2006. Before the residency, I was primarily making my art from wood scrap and painting it. Being exposed to the work of my residency colleagues such as Neil, as well as the many collections we visited, really gave me an appreciation for the material itself. Neil turned the wood form for this sculpture, and I added a wood grain pattern with brown flocking. It wasn’t long before I found a way I could let the actual natural colors and patterns found in wood integrate with my own aesthetic.
