Notes: “Passage to the Orient” was included in the Center’s 2006 allTURNatives: Form + Spirit exhibition, the show which marked the culmination of my summer in the Center’s ITE residency. It was among the first of the Black and White vessels, the series which began my exploration into “cultivated” design. I had become interested in a more formal approach to design - using line, contrast and texture to create an interesting composition within a split vessel turning. Up until that point my work had been mostly influenced by the natural world so this new direction was, for me, defining. To be with the Wood Turning Center (as it was called then), in Philadelphia, in the midst of so much great art, and to have the company and influence of my fellow lathe artists was a pivotal experience. I realized that from all the possibilities and combinations, an artist must find and choose one aesthetic, a personal one, on which to focus.
