Box of Promises
My piece, entitled Box of Promises, was inspired by the scale limitation of the exhibition. In stark contrast to the diminutive size of my artwork, I tried to convey a sense of monumental landscape through the form and subject matter of the wooden box. The tall hillside box, which is created from shaping wood on the lathe, is carved and painted to suggest lush grass. Proudly perched atop the hill is a gilded house of gold. The placement, size and glimmer of the house implies preciousness, optimism and promise. Inside the box is housed a collection of additional gem-like houses. It is as though the box serves to suggest a geode inside which a plethora of resplendence and promise resides.
